The Poop Book

Writer: Pravasini SahooPravasini Sahoo

Every once in a while, one discovers a book so enjoyable that the experience isn’t quite complete until you share it with the world.

Last week when my son was searching for books I discover one such wonderful book. A book about Poop!

Poop can be cool!

I love books that break the stereo-type. That speak about topics less-discussed. This one does all that – and delightfully so!

The Poop book by Tejaswini Apte-Rahm and Sujatha Padmanabhan is both informative and delightful, effortlessly picking up a taboo subject for its theme. The illustrations by Priya Kuriyan add beautifully to the narrative.

The book is not about potty or toilet training for children. Its about the fascinating world of Animal Poop!

Doo-Doo

Poop is Home. Poop is Food!

Animal droppings have many names. And many uses too!

Did you know lions roll in the poop of other animals? Just for fun!

Poop to mark one's territory

Or that termites use their Poop to build their nests?

Or that some birds use Poop to keep their bodies cool in summer?

Poop to protect oneself

From Construction to Self-protection – From Camouflage to Food – Poop means a lot in the animal world.

Poop plays a significant role in the animal world.

Certainly more than it does in the human world – particularly for new parents struggling to keep their head above the Poop delgue of an infant 🙂 as author Fredrik Backman puts down so tellingly in his Book.

This whole parenthood things isn’t as easy as it looks…There’s a hell of a lot to keep track of….Above all, Poop!

The presence of poop. The absence of Poop. The discovery of Poop. The aromatic sensation of Poop. The waiting for Poop. Seriously, I cannot express how much of your life will be spent waiting for Poop once you have children!

Fredrik Backman: Things My Son Needs to Know About The World

The illustrations are catchy, the captions, light and breezy.

Dung-Ho!

Animal Dung is an integral part of rural life in India. From manure for the farm to fuel for the cooking fires – dung makes for a very basic part of life in the Indian village.

City kids often turn up their noses when they encounter this aspect of village life. For while talking about poop as a joke is ok for them, the idea of touching or working with it seems yucky. Unthinkable!

And that’s where I liked the book most. At the end of the book – there was a little surprise. This…

A Bookmark of recycled paper – made of guess what?

Poop! Of course!

Pretty cool huh?

Before you ask – No – it doesn’t smell or stink. 🙂 In fact it has that wonderful fragrance one finds in recycled paper and books 🙂

Not only did the book open out a fascinating, little-known world to kids, it also subtly broke down conditioned notions and turned a taboo-topic into one worthy of discussion.

Kids love discussing poop anyway. Potty and Fart are amongst their all-time favourite topics. This book is sure to enthrall them!

I’d highly recommend you get a copy. For reading. For gifting. Or borrow it from me. It’s sure to delight you.
